Pine Furniture
Pine furniture is used all over the United Kingdom in the forms of chairs, tables, beds, cupboards and home cabinets. Pine itself as a wood is used elsewhere as well for boxes, fences, poles and a whole range of other artefacts.
It has its routes in the Industrial Revolution when there was a huge rise in the amounts of houses being built as factories started to appear all over industrialised town like Manchester. It was an alternative to the oaks and hard woods that were preferred by the upper classes. It is strong, durable and environmentally friendly. It is specifically Scots pine that is used in the production of a lot of wooden furniture we take for granted, which with its ease of staining or treating can be made to look like other types of wood.
One needn't worry about where the material is coming from either. Most of the pine that you can buy in Britain is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (the FSC), which ensures that the management of the forests around the world is responsible and ethically sound.
